Bentota

Madu River
Bentota is a resort town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Its long Bentota Beach stretches north, where it becomes a sandy strip known as Paradise Island, parallel to Bentota Lagoon. Mirissa is a beautiful little fishing village with a nice beach and two surfing points. One for advanced surfers, and one for intermediate ones. However the beach town is widely known for its racist behavior towards local people. Widespread discrimination against anyone with a dark skin is common in the hotels and restaurants on the beach and some even have public banners saying locals are not welcome. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.
